Weed Control

Annual weeds can be prevented by application of a spring pre-emergent, whether spray or granule, but low in N, as we don't want to over feed spring turf as it's not good for the plant, nor do we want to cause ourselves too much mowing, whether for mowing crew or customer.

Existing weed control can be attempted by the application of a post-emergent granular weed and feed, best done in the fall when the physiology of the plant is most susceptible to herbicide. However, spraying broadleaf control is far more effective than granular, and is best done by a trained and certified applicator like myself.

Broadleaf chemistries have evolved, having mostly been 2,4D, a very unfriendly chemical, to knock out dandelions, which comes from the French "Dents de Lion," or "Teeth of Lion." Other herbicides exist today that can be utilized by a certified applicator that are low in 2,4D or don't contain it at all, lowering unwanted odor and potential turfgrass burn. Consult your local turf specialists for a sprayed herbicide application using a Zspray Zmax. I have my chosen selections.

Identifying weeds and their life cycles is how to determine the best solution.Dr. Aaron Patton, Purdue Turfgrass Extension Specialist, has written the most outstanding booklet on turf weeds, that which I keep handy, with color photos and herbicide solutions available through the Purdue education store:
