Mowing

Proper mowing is crucial to maintain good turf. Mowing heights for different types of turf and usages vary, but a general height for the average yard is 3.5". When measuring the height a mower is mowing at, do not assume that the listed gauge height on a mower is accurate. Instead, measure mowed turf with a height indicator or ruler from the ground up. Mowing taller on a non-irrigated turf during the heat of summer does help it to survive better.

Mowing turf wet is detrimental and not recommended. Mow when dry. Regardless of the height at the time of mowing, do not mow more than 1/3 of that height per mowing.

If it is too tall, then bring down the height in increments. Never leave residual clippings on top of turf – go back over and chop it up with the deck set above your original mowing height. Clumps of mowed turf will kill what is underneath – once clumps become wet they become even more difficult to dissipate. Proper mowing also lessens insect activity that can be detrimental to a lawn.

Bagging is only if absolutely necessary. One wants to put the clippings back down that already contain the applied nutrients that you paid for as fertilizer that can be reutilized in the soil. Core pulling creates a core of soil that then causes the thatch layer to decompose into humus, thus preventing too much thatch and benefitting the soil simultaneously.

Blade sharpening insures cutting while dull blades insures ripping – keep your blades sharp! Balancing of the blades during the sharpening process results in longer lasting spindles and push mower engines.
